Abstract
This study mainly focuses on the three research objectives which aim at exploring the origin and the development of hotel revenue management in China, the working contents and skills which are related to the revenue management employees, and the future career development directions from the perspective of industry practitioners.To solve the research questions, a semi-structured interview was conducted with 15 senior hotel employees who have working experience with revenue management from full-service hotels or hotel groups located in mainland China. Data was collected through convenience sampling, and was analyzed by the method of grounded theory.
The current study includes four theoretical contributions: firstly, it explores the time of origins and the development of revenue management in the hotel industry in China; secondly, it explores the working experiences and expertise for the employees who are in hotel revenue management-related positions; thirdly, it updates the relevant contents, such as tools, platforms, career path, skill requirement, and training requirement, related to hotel revenue management; and lastly, it provides directions for the application of hotel revenue management from educational and managerial perspectives. Practically, this study also offers implications to the educational institutions, hotel management parties, and human resource recruitment and training teams. Finally, limitations and the future research directions are discussed in the study.
