Abstract
The BBNaija show is a social experiment of conflict of interests that extends beyond the Big Brother House to the virtual fans of the housemates. This study, using corpus-assisted techniques, examines the naming strategies in the support-motivated conflicts among BBNaija Housemates’ Virtual Fans. The data of the study consists of a mini-corpus of BBNaija virtual fans’ comments on the official Facebook pages of BBNaija and two national dailies: Vanguard and Punchng. The study adopts critical stylistics as proposed by Jeffries (2007), and discursive strategies in Reisigl and Wodak’s Discourse Historical Approach (DHA). The study argues, among others, that naming is deployed in the support-motivated conflict by the opposing BBN housemates’ fanbases as a discursive strategy of negative other presentation in the struggle to promote a housemate to win the BBN prize.
