Abstract

In this paper, an ultrasound reflectometry technique for contact measurements was used to characterize the wheel-endpost and rail edges contact. Finite element analysis was also carried out with a three-dimensional model. Ultrasonic measurements and finite element simulations were carried out with varied loads and different endpost thickness. A new approach investigating the wheel-endpost contact is introduced and a pilot study using ultrasound reflectometry on the combined materials contact measurements is included.
