Abstract

This study compared the triangular vowel space area for the vowels /i-æ-u/ and /ɪ-ɛ-ʊ/, as produced by speakers of American English (AE) and by Cantonese learners of English from Hong Kong (HKE speakers). Results indicated discrepant findings regarding the HKE speakers’ proficiency levels and their vowel spaces, suggesGng that other, more sophisticated measures might be necessary to objectify proficiency level.
