Abstract

The application of HID lamps in automobiles is gaining popularity owing to the color of the light as well as high lumen/watt ratio from the lamp. In the present paper a voltage multiplier integrated with the secondary winding of the DC converter transformer generates the required voltage to be applied to the igniter. The proposed method not only eliminates one auxiliary winding but also reduces the voltage across the switch on the primary side and consequently the rating of the switch is reduced. The use of triple insulated wire on an RM core in the design of the high voltage igniter is also presented in the paper. A brief review of the HID circuits is done and compared with the proposed circuit. Experimental results from the prototype are presented.
