Abstract
The engagement of incineration bottom ash (IBA) as a cementing material offers a sustainable solution to both waste management and construction industry challenges. This chapter summarized the potential of IBA as a raw material in cement production, a supplementary cementitious material (SCM), and a geopolymer precursor. Through a comprehensive review of existing literature, the chemical composition, reactivity, and mechanical properties of IBA-based construction materials were summarized. Challenges such as variability in IBA composition, inhibitory effects on clinker formation, and expansion and cracking issues were discussed, along with potential mitigation strategies. Additionally, the role of legislation and regulations in promoting IBA utilization in construction materials was highlighted, emphasizing the need for mandatory recycling requirements and public awareness campaigns. Overall, the engagement of IBA in cementing material is a promising avenue for sustainable waste management and construction practices, with continued research, technological innovation, and policy support necessary to maximize its potential benefits.
