Abstract
Since the release of ChatGPT, there has been considerable confusion regarding the responsible use of Generative AI (GenAI) tools throughout the research and writing processes. The rapid integration of GenAI into the research and writing practices has outpaced our understanding of its ethical implications and the empirical evaluation of its effectiveness in supporting research tasks. Although many academic publishers and journals have attempted to establish policies and guidelines, these efforts are often fragmented and vary significantly in length and detail. This inconsistency underscores the need for a comprehensive framework that can be applied at different stages of writing and research by both teachers interested in conducting research and other researchers.
In response to the lack of well-developed policies and guidelines for using GenAI in writing and research activities, we propose a framework designed to facilitate the responsible and appropriate use of GenAI. This framework is built on five key elements of quality research: (1) transparency, (2) methodological rigor, (3) ethics, (4) societal value, and (5) human accountability. It aims to assist teacher-researchers and scholars in integrating GenAI effectively at every stage of their writing and research process. Additionally, this presentation offers important considerations for teacher-researchers and scholars planning to incorporate GenAI into their writing and research endeavors.
