Abstract

Near-to-shape is an important criterion in technical applications, especially composite materials, allowing waste elimination, processing time reduction, as well as a better control over the final shape of the product, without the need of ulterior operations. Knitting technology is well suited for this purpose, offering flexibility and a large range of shaping possibilities, both in 2D and 3D fabrics. The knitted sandwich fabrics are 3D structures made of two separate layers, connected in between. Different connecting possibilities have already been investigated and developed. The paper characterises the sandwich fabrics and analyses the ways of diversification with regard to their shape, using flat knitting machines. Different examples are presented and discussed, from the point of view of structure, shaping method and effect. The potential for practical applications as reinforcement materials is considered.
