Abstract
In construction projects, the multi-party including the owner, the designer, the general contractor, the sub-contractor and the engineer etc. collaborate to make the project successful. Up to now, although some collaborative systems have been used to facilitate the collaboration, the shop drawings have not been distinguished from the other types of documents in the systems, although they not only play a very important role in construction, but also have remarkable characteristics that deserve them to be handled separately. This study aims to improve the management of the shop drawings for construction projects by expanding an existing collaborative system. The activities related to the collaborative management of shop drawings among the multi-party are investigated. A collaborative model of shop drawings is established and it is implemented in an existing collaborative system. The system was then applied in a simulating way in the project of the National Stadium, which will be the main stadium of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. It is concluded that the system can not only enhance the working efficiency for managing the shop drawings, but also save costs and improve quality of work for the multi-party in construction projects.
