Abstract

As urban landscapes have evolved into more vertical and intricate structures, the discussion has shifted toward understanding cities to more accurately capture their morphological characteristics in the vertical dimension. The translation from ground-level urban qualities to vertical spaces and ensuring horizontal connections with the surrounding urban fabric enable the foster of social, economic, environmental, and ecological sustainability. While quantitative methods exist to measure these morphological changes, there is a noticeable gap in evaluating their impact from a human-centric perspective, particularly related to human spatial perceptions.
This paper establishes an evaluation framework grounded in urban design theory and neuroscience to assess the trendy vertical urban complex and emotional responses they evoke within various spatial conditions. It builds on traditional urban design theories and guidelines to evolve the comprehensive control variables that account for multiple levels of these vertical public spaces. The framework includes parameters to clarify the correlation between spatial conditions and emotions for implementation in multi-dimensional, complex, and compact cities.
