Abstract
The fashion industry is currently navigating a complex landscape marked by the urgent need for sustainability and the challenges of material innovation. The transition to greener and sustainable production and consumption has become particularly necessary given the UNDP’s sustainable development goals. Materials innovation in fashion plays an unassailable role in the achievement of sustainable future fashion. This chapter examines the paradoxes inherent in the pursuit of eco-friendly practices while maintaining the aesthetic and functional demands of contemporary fashion. This introductory chapter provides a succinct discussion on the transformative potential of innovative materials, including bio-based textiles, recycled fibres, and advanced manufacturing techniques in achieving green fashion. Moreso, the chapter discusses the societal rhetoric inherent in the sustainable fashion transition and provides a path for widespread adoption. Furthermore, the chapter provides a meticulous overview of the critical role of collaboration among designers, manufacturers, and consumers in overcoming these barriers. It emphasises the need for a holistic approach that integrates sustainability into every facet of the fashion supply chain and advocates for the reimagination of the fashion industry’s relationship with sustainability, urging a collective commitment to fostering a future where creativity and ecological responsibility can coexist to foster strategies for innovations that align with environmental stewardship. This will help pave the way for a more resilient and responsible industry that meets the needs of both people and the planet.
