Abstract

Based on the Green Theorem, section properties of a section with arbitrary shape can be obtained by operating a set of transformed section property (TSP) functions around the perimeter of the section. This reduces the task of working out individual section properties into merely defining the perimeter of the section in terms of rectangular and polar co-ordinates. A standard procedure in applying the TSP functions to calculate section properties is illustrated in a way suitable for software implementation. By using the TSP function approach in a rational manner, cross-section resistances of both standard hot-rolled sections and cold-formed sections can also be evaluated.
