Abstract

The present paper is intended to investigate the effect of real seams on fabric drape. Seam parameters such as seam allowances, seam positions and stitch types will be discussed in relation to drape properties. Vertical and radial seams are introduced and investigated experimentally. Simple structure fabrics of plain and twill weaves with various fibre contents such as cotton, silk, wool and polyester were used. Peirce's cantilever and a conventional drapemeter have been chosen to evaluate drape properties in two and three dimensions respectively. Experimental results were compared in terms of bending length and drape coefficient. The knowledge gained from the study of fabric drape with seams is helpful in understanding seam properties better and provides guidance for garment designs. Moreover, it will be applicable in garment drape prediction in the clothing CAD systems.
