Abstract
People usually neglect their mouth hygiene. Many surveys have shown that only a small portion of the public gets regular check-ups on their oral status, especially the elderly. Since oral problems such as periodontal disease, gingivitis, cavities, oral cancer, etc., are common in the elderly, the importance of promoting oral health (OH) in the elderly has been promulgated. The primary health care (PHC) problem is directly affecting their appetite, health and quality of life. This program will focus on the aging to provide them with information on maintaining oral health, to promote a regular dental check up every year, and to alert the public to the importance of oral health to the quality of life of the aging. In the program, we try to invite the members of the old age home and elderly health centre in Tseung Kwan O (TKO) to join. Firstly, we will design a questionnaire to assess the needs and conditions of oral health and send it to the old age home and health centre. Also, we will invite some volunteers into the elderly centres from the same community to join our program. Secondly, we will hold a competition of "Who is the best?" in order to select the healthiest teeth at the elderly centre. Two "Health Stars" will be invited to award prizes to the winner and share their experience of oral health. The winner of the competition will be invited to share his/her tips for maintaining healthy teeth and the benefit of doing so. Thirdly, we will take a video record of this function. Finally, we will send the other questionnaire to participants to evaluate the activity. Then the old age home will be encouraged to put this video record in their health talk. We will invite the Metro City and East Point City to let us show the photos and video tape. Tseung Kwan O is a new town in Hong Kong. We hope all sectors can collaborate to support this program.
