Until recently, most of the research on knowledge management (KM) and its application has focused mainly on large organizations. Few issues relating to the application of KM in small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) have been discussed. .Although SMEs do not necessarily share the same characteristics and. ideals as large ones, there are certain unique features of SMEs that need to be understood before KM is implemented in their environment for increasing competitiveness. This paper based on the literature review, discusses KM in the i ext of SMEs, It looks at their characteristics, their advantages and disadvantages, their strengths and weaknesses, and their key problems and issues, in. the context of KM. Recognition of all the elements is crucial in order to provide a well-suited KM approach for SMEs.
