Abstract

This paper presents the rigid-plastic analysis of square hollow section steel beams subjected to transverse blast load. 35, 40 and 50mm square beams were subjected to a uniform transverse blast load and the impulse was measured using a ballistic pendulum. The energy consumed in the local cross-sectional deformation and the flexural beam bending deformation is quantified. The deformed cross-section of the beams at mid section is simplified and stationary plastic hinges are used to quantify the energy consumed in local deformation. SHS steel beams subjected to transverse blast loads were found to undergo local cross-sectional deformations that consume up to 50% of the input energy.
