Abstract
The use of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) material in hot mix asphalt (HMA) is an economic solution for reducing asphalt-containing waste. The change of asphalt binder properties in RAP, however, limits the percentage of RAP that can be used in the HMA. Studies based on laboratory-Aged asphalt binders show that waste cooking oil (WCO) can be potentially used as a rejuvenating agent. This paper investigates the effects of WCO on naturally aged asphalt binder extracted from a 29 year-old pavement in Hong Kong. Different percentages of WCO were blended with asphalt binder samples, and rheological properties were measured and compared by various indicators. The results show that the use of WCO softens and rejuvenates the naturally aged asphalt binder, although there is no significant difference between non-rejuvenated sample and that containing 3% WCO. The microscopic change of asphaltenes in the asphalt binder was examined by using transmission electron microscope (TEM). The results show that needle-shaped microstructures in the naturally aged samples were ruptured after adding WCO, implying that the oil has some "dissolving" effects on the aging product-Asphaltenes. ,.
