The Effectiveness of Virtual Walking Intervention in Enhancing Wellness: A Scoping Review

Research output: Journal article publicationJournal articleAcademic researchpeer-review

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Virtual walking may complement traditional physical therapy for people with mobility impairments. This scoping review examines the characteristics, effectiveness, feasibility, and neurological mechanisms of virtual walking interventions for health-related outcomes. METHODS: English-language studies from twelve databases (2014-2024) were reviewed. RESULTS: Thirteen studies addressed three forms of virtual walking: passive observation, arm swing, and foot tracking. Significant outcomes included reduced pain, improved mobility and muscle strength, and decreased depression. CONCLUSIONS: Further research should clarify neurological mechanisms and verify psychosocial benefits through randomized trials.
