Abstract

It is the aim of this paper to compare and contrast the mechanical properties obtainable from two Saffil-based metal matrix composites, the first with a high strength heat-treatable aluminium alloy matrix (alloy 7010) and the second with a low strength non-heat-treatable alloy (Al-5Mg where the composition is in approximate weight per cent). The mechanical properties of both composites are compared with those of the squeeze-cast monolithic alloys. The mechanical properties of composites made with the Al-5Mg alloy show significant improvements over the monolithic alloy. However, the properties of the high strength alloy 7010 composites are lower than those of the monolithic material with the exception of elastic modulus.
