Abstract

In the present study, the acoustical insertion loss of a double layer ventilation window design was tested on site in a real building facing a very busy trunk road of Hong Kong. The outdoor noise level at 1 m away from the building façade ranged between 75 to 80dBA. Simultaneous measurements inside and at the façades of two adjacent rooms - one with the ventilation window and the other with a conventional side hang window, were carried out. The difference between the average noise levels (LA10) in the two rooms was the insertion loss of the ventilation window. It was found that under the strong external traffic noise, the ventilation window could provide a 8 dB noise level reduction compared with the conventional side hang window setup. The application of sound absorption material of NRC 0.75 on the bottom area of the window resulted in 1 dB increase in the insertion loss. The results had been confirmed by repeated measurements.
