Abstract

The neutral cluster [Os3(μ-H)2(CO)9(μ3-CNC5H4-CHCH2)] (1) has been made in good yield by the reaction of [Os3(μ-H)3(CO)9(μ3-CCl)] and 2-vinylpyridine in the presence of an excess of DBU (1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene). Thermolysis of 1 in n-hexane gives a novel triosmium alkylidene cluster [Os3(μ-H)(CO)9(μ-C(H)-NC5H4-η2-CH CH2)] (2). Both complexes have been fully characterised by spectroscopic methods and their structures established by X-ray crystallography.
