Abstract

Solid state vacuum pyrolysis of Os3H3(CO)9(μ3-COMe) (1) gives the dark purple octanuclear carbido cluster Os8C(CO)22(2) in ca. 15% yield. An X-ray analysis of 2 shows that the carbido-carbon is encapsulated in a trigonal prismatic cavity within the metal core.
