Abstract

Social support is essential to help women to leave abusive intimate relationships and get back to their life; however, research on social support to abused women in China is rather scarce. The scant research in this area limits the ability of the government to develop relevant policies and social services for abused women in China. This paper reports a qualitative study with ten abused women concerning their experiences of abuse and the use of formal and informal social support systems in Guangzhou, China. Focuses of this paper are: to study help-seeking patterns among these abused women; and to examine characteristics of social support systems among these women.
