Abstract
Ti-48at% Al crystals containing a single set of lamellae with parallel lamellar planes (PST crystal) have been grown by a magnetically-suspended floating zone method. The microstructure of PST crystals has been observed and analyzed through optical microscope and TEM. The results show that the growth of PST crystals depends on the crystal growing rate. When the growing rate is less than 5mm/h, the PST crystal can be obtained; but when the gowing rate is upto 100mm/h, the crystal containing columnar grains is formed. TEM analysis demonstrated that the lamellar structure of the PST crystals contains three types of domain boundaries, which are true-twin type, pseudotwin type and 120° -rotational twin type boundary.
