Abstract
Combustion of PMMA and monomer MMA at different temperature were studied using mass spectrometry and gas chromatography with a high heating rate and the main combustion mechanism of PMMA was speculated. The results indicate that, at high heating rate, combustion of PMMA occurs in three broad stages: first, PMMA is heated and degrades to generate MMA; then, MMA decomposes to produce small molecule products; finally, the small molecules burn. In additional, at high temperature, MMA can react with oxygen directly and produce methyl pyruvate, formaldehyde and acetone, but the reaction is minor in the process of PMMA combustion.
