Abstract
To compare the bearing capacity of a screw pile and a conventional straight pile, two indoor static load model tests were carried out in sand. And the effect of the pitch of a screw pile on its bearing capacity is also evaluated. After the indoor static load tests a series of soil tests are carried out to study the physico-mechanical properties of sand. The test results show that under the same conditions the bearing capacity of screw pile is 1-4 times that of conventional straight pile; and the average ultimate friction is 3-4 times that of conventional straight pile; when the pitch of screw pile decreases within a certain range, the ultimate bearing capacity, ultimate friction and the ability to control the settlement gradually increase.
