Abstract
Surface integrity plays an extremely important role in the unexpected fracture of ceramic parts and their reliability in service. This paper attempts to study the surface integrity of electro-discharge machined SiAlON ceramics and their strengthening by quenching. Flexural strength will be used for evaluating the effect of the two processes on the machined specimens. The distribution of the strength data will be further analyzed by the Weibull statistical method to give a quantitative measure of the surface integrity.
