Street furniture design: A starting point for quality urban renewal

Abstract

Urban renewal has been an important topic related to people's quality of life in recent years. Different from the grand perspective of urban policy and planning, this paper explores the possibilities of putting street furniture as an initial stage in urban renewal in order to improve the quality of urban environment. Take a street furniture research and design project in Wan Chai of Hong Kong as case study, this paper identifies the importance of street furniture design in the urban renewal progress. The paper shows the research and design process in details in order to explain and discuss the importance of working with the government, social and community organisations and the city users.
