Abstract

Shape Memory Polymers (SMPs) and their applications to smart textile products are reviewed. They are defined as polymeric materials with the ability to sense and respond to external stimuli in a predetermined shape and are compared with shape memory metals and ceramics. Developments by CdF Chimie, Nippon Zeon., Kuraray, Asahi and Mitsubishi Heavy Industry are summarised, and advances made by individual scientists are covered. The characteristics of SMPs are explored, followed by description of other properties of SMPs. The application of SMPs to textiles is led by Japan, with available forms of SMPs including fibres, foams, solution, film and powder. Consumer goods, textile products, medical supplies and industrial applications are significant markets, and there are many others (listed). Clothing uses particularly are examined, with "smart fabrics" from Diaplex Co. for outerwear described. Commercially available products are still limited in quantity and variety but there is great potential.
