Abstract

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE This paper presents the development of a special kind of smart fibrous materials with the ability to capture mist from atmosphere. It was achieved through building the system with hierarchical micro/macro-porous fibrous network and utilizes the switchable hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties of smart nanomaterials. The layer of nano titania coating on fiber surface offers a novel type of functional materials that display a high level of hydrophilicity upon light illumination. The combination of hydrophobic and hydrophilic characteristics formed within fibrous matrix in desired pattern gives rise to an attractive property for collecting moisture from air.
