Abstract

This paper presents an investigation into the slenderness limits for EHS and OHS subject to bending by using an equivalent RHS approach. Experimental data from tests carried out by Chan and Gardner (2008) on EHS and by Theofanous et al. (2009) on OHS were used as the basis for analysis. The newly derived limits for EHS and OHS are compared with slenderness limits in various codes for RHS. The bending capacity predicted using the RHS approach is also compared with the moment capacity from experiments on EHS/OHS beams.
