Abstract
Yuan Shuai Liu and Jian Yong Wu of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University have devised a semicontinuous perfusion culture process for producing the pigment from Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous yeast. They found that adding hydrogen peroxide to the culture boosts yields. Researchers cultured the organism in shake flasks, removing about 25% of the culture every 12 hours. After 10 days biomass density reached 65.6g/L, astaxanthin yield was 52.5g/L and productivity was 4.38 mg/L per hour. These results were larger than those in a repeated fed batch process.
