Abstract

This paper aims to provide new perspective on mapping service in light of service dominate logic view to explore if service design approaches could provide an ideal source for interpreting existing service system, providing new ones and thus realise the service logic in mapping service. The advanced digital technology and smart devices allow maps to function as participatory platforms with the capacity to collect, create, store and process data through people’s interaction with others, environment and cities. These technological developments have allowed maps to be transcended its artefactual value, which reflects its
fundamental ontological and epistemological understanding of maps/mapping.
The technological shift has allowed for collaborative mapping activities. Users have become co-producers of maps (prosumer), as have service and technology providers, governments and other stakeholders. These have significantly challenged the way that key stakeholders interact with others through maps and further changed the way that design is involved in maps or location-based service development. This view falls in line with a complex value co-creation system, and the user takes the active role in service delivery, thus play the critical role in the co-creation and realisation of its value from a proposition provider offers (i.e. customer as a prosumer and value creator). In this way, the role of user and producer are not distinct, which means user and provider co-creates the value in interaction amongst entities-including map service providers, users, governments and other related entities—through the integration of resources.
