    Abstract

A review of Wm Theodore de Bary's book Waiting for the Dawn: A Plan for the Prince: Huang Tsung-hsi’s Ming-i tai-fang lu published by Columbia University Press in 1993. The book, largely based on the author's 1953 PhD dissertation, provides magisterial study of Huang Tsung-hsi's (1610-1695) classic discourses on late imperial, especially Ming dynasty, government, pointing out as many aspects of its failure as remedial suggestions at the state level.
