Different approaches adopted in those guides are outlined with the smoke physi cs behind explained. Engineering principles on smoke dynamics of these design gu ides are observed to be similar. Basically, the methods include imposing strong opposite airflow to prevent smoke spreading, applying pressure differentials aga inst a physical barrier, smoke dilution and extraction. Smoke ventilation appear s to be a common approach for smoke management in an atrium. An acceptable smoke layer interface height can be kept; or at least, reducing the descending rate o f the smoke layer. These guides give general principles for the design, but not all the atria are covered, especially those in new construction projects of the Far East.
