    Abstract

    A review of J.F. Handlin's 1983 book published by University of California Press which shows the re-orientation of a number of late Ming Confucian-minded scholar-officials, including Lü Kun (1536-1618), Luo Rufang (1515-1588), Hai Rui (1515-1587), Yang Dongming (1548-1624), and Feng Congwu (1556-1627), to a "fact-centered outlook" to play the role as "doctor to society".
