Abstract

In order to investigate the excitation mechanism and response characteristics of wind-rain induced vibration of stay cable, an instrumentation system of wind-rain induced vibration measurement, which consists of anemometer, rain gauge and accelerometer, was installed on the Dongting Lake Bridge, Yueyang, China. Many events of wind-rain induced vibration on stay cable were recorded. The preliminary characteristics of wind-rain induced vibrations, such as mode displacement amplitude, modal participation, aerodynamic negative damping and so on, were presented. The results show that the minority of the responses is nearly a single mode response and the majority of the responses is the participation of the dominant mode and multi-mode responses during wind-rain induced vibration.
