Abstract

Sport and exercise science have been significantly influenced by technical advancements as have other aspects of life. It is challenging to imagine modern sports and many branches of exercise without the use of technology. The convergence of bioengineering and the Internet of Things (IoT) is transforming sports science, ushering in a new era of data-driven performance optimization and injury prevention. The neuromuscular system plays a significant role in sports, and this chapter discusses current advancements in the field of neuromuscular sciences related to sports and exercise. These advances link to the physical components of the neuromuscular system such as force production, velocity, muscular activity, joint ranges, etc. Wearable technologies, such as smartwatches, GPS trackers, and muscle activity monitors, are now essential tools for monitoring athlete performance. These devices gather extensive data about physiological factors, movement patterns, and ambient circumstances, allowing for immediate feedback and decision-making based on data. Moreover, these devices are cloud-connected and can analyze and share data to foster collaboration among athletes, coaches, and scientists. The field of neuromuscular science has significantly benefitted from such advancements. Muscle activation patterns, joint kinematics as well as kinetics have been studied through electromyography (EMG), inertial measurement units (IMUs) plus other biomechanical sensors with great precision by researchers. This information can be used to develop effective training programs, improve movement efficiency, and minimize the risk of injuries. Additionally, the chapter explains how biofeedback systems coupled with virtual reality and augmented reality enhance sports performance. These technologies provide immersive training environments that give instantaneous feedback on movement patterns thus enhancing skill acquisition and motor learning.
