Abstract

The Eighth International Conference on Water Repellent Treatment and Protective Surface Technology for Building Materials (Hydrophobe VIII) was held at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), Hong Kong, China on 7-9 December 2017. The Hydrophobe conference has had a long history. Since its launch in 1995 in Delft, it has travelled to Zurich (1998), Hannover (2001), Stockholm (2004), Brussels (2008), Rome (2011) and Lisbon (2014). The Hydrophobe VIII has been jointly organized by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Faculty of Engineering of Hokkaido University and School of Civil Engineering of Qingdao University of Technology.
Following the well-established tradition of the series, Hydrophobe VIII provides an international forum for all concerned with the applications of water repellent and other protective surface technologies in civil engineering to exchange recent advances in both research and practice, and to strengthen international collaboration for the future development of the field. An important motivation to host Hydrophobe VIII in Hong Kong was to bring this conference for the first time to Asia where infrastructure booms. It is strongly believed that protective surface treatment would be one of the most cost-effective solutions for the preventive maintenance of concrete and building infrastructure.
The conference program comprised 57 presentations, including 7 Keynote and 4 Invited lectures. The proceedings of the conference consist of two parts: (i) a printed volume that contains the abstracts of all papers accepted by the conference; (ii) a printed volume that contains all full papers (or abstracts if full papers were not submitted). The papers were contributed by researchers from 15 countries and regions around the world.
The success of the conference was due to the support and efforts of many individuals and organizations. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we would like to thank all authors for their careful preparation of the manuscripts and all Keynote and Invited Speakers for sharing their work and insight at the conference. All papers submitted for the conference were reviewed by members of the International Scientific Committee and the Organising Committee. We are grateful to all of them for their important contributions to the conference.
In addition to sharing the paper review task, members of the Organising Committee were also most generous with their time in the organization work. As Chairman and Co-Chairmen of the Organising Committee, we are indebted to all of them. Special thanks go to Prof. Klaus LITTMANN, University of Hannover, the Conference Secretary Dr. Xiao XUE, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Prof. Peng ZHANG, Qingdao University of Technology, for their generosity in devoting their previous time to the conference.

This conference was held at a time when PolyU had already launched a year-long celebration of its 80th anniversary. The university was established as a Government Trade School in 1937, and has evolved over the past eight decades into one of the top universities in Asia with internationally recognised excellence in civil engineering and many other disciplines. We were pleased to dedicate this conference to the 80th anniversary of PolyU.
