Abstract

Polarization mode beating length and self-sustained pulsation in current-pumped vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSEL) were were analyzed. The output power of an optically pumped birefringent VCSEL simulated using the model was plotted. Polarization mode beating was observed with a beating frequency determined largely by the cavity's birefringence. Short pulses with high extinction ratio were obtained with a repetition rate determined by the cavity birefringence.
