Abstract

In this paper, we experimentally compare the performance of on-off keying (OOK), four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) and discrete multi-tone (DMT) for 50Gb/s passive optical network (PON) leveraging 10G cost-efficient components and digital signal processing (DSP). In the bandwidth limited intensity modulation and direct detection PON system, these three modulation formats have different main distortions. The limited bandwidth, high signal-to-noise ratio requirement and high peak-to-average power ratio are the main factors that limit OOK, PAM4 and DMT performances, respectively. For these three modulation formats, we adopt three specific DSP algorithms to solve their main distortions. The experimental results show that, PAM4 and DMT can achieve 1.1dB and 0.9dB receiver sensitivity improvement compared to OOK in the bandwidth limited PON system, respectively.
