Abstract

This short paper introduces the aim of hosting a Participatory Design Conference (PDC) Place in Tamaki Makaurau (Auckland), Aotearoa New Zealand. Through connection to place as the source and focus of exploration, we seek to expand on the idea of the conference to create places as points for local and worldwide connections and expand the worlds of participatory design. Furthermore, embracing cosmologies requires the recognition of the pivotal role of place in Indigenous worldviews where connectedness and interdependence are embedded. Grounded in the context of Aotearoa, the article starts with a brief introduction to place in te Ao Maori, followed by each partnering organisation giving a background overview to outline their connection to the project. It closes with a description of the different events seeking the connection in place of partners, community organisations, academic community, students and design practitioners.
