Abstract
This chapter focuses on parental socialization beliefs and practices in Hong Kong. Although Hong Kong is an international city with Western cultural attributes, it is also strongly influenced by traditional Chinese culture. The first section outlines the salient socialization beliefs and practices under the influence of traditional Chinese culture, with particular reference to two family instruction books (Di Zi Gui and Master Chu’s Homilies for Families). In the second section, research findings on parental socialization beliefs in Hong Kong are reviewed. The third part focuses on parenting practice in Hong Kong and its consequences on adolescent developmental outcomes. Moreover, the future research directions in this area are outlined in the fourth section. Finally, several practice and policy recommendations based on this review are proposed.
