Abstract
The use of graded index (GRIN) rod lenses to optimize the coupling of a collimated light beam into a single mode fiber was discussed. The proposed system was composed of two pieces of GRIN rod lenses with optimized lengths and separation. The beam parameters were matched to the numerical aperture and core diameter of the single mode fiber to achieve maximum coupling efficiency. It was found that a single piece of GRIN lens did not match the requirements of numerical aperture and small core diameter of a single mode fiber due to its fixed characteristic parameters.
