Abstract

A scalable video codec can produce bitstreams with different rates and reconstructed quality. This paper focuses on Fine Granularity Scalable (FGS) video coding scheme although the proposed framework can work with all the layered video and image coding methods. FGS, which has been adopted in the MPEG-4 streaming video profile, provides a layered and fine granularity scalable bitstream with different importance at different bitplanes. A framework is proposed for the positioning of resynchronization markers for FGS video such that the resynchronization markers can be optimally inserted in each bitplane according to the importance of the bitplane and the time-varying channel condition. The effectiveness of this scheme lies in reducing loss of information based on significance of each bitplane of FGS video streaming. Experimental results demonstrate that this scheme significantly improves video quality for wireless video transmission.
