On the strength of RC beams shear strengthened with prestressed FRP straps

Abstract

A very attractive method for enhancing the shear strength of reinforced concrete (RC) beams is external fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcement. As large strains of failure are often present in FRP composites, they can be prestressed to make more efficient use of their tensile strength. Discussed is one application of prestressed FRP which is the shear strengthening of RC beams using FRP straps which are wrapped around the entire section of the beam. This paper presents a shear strength model for RC beams strengthened with prestressed FRP straps; the model is then deployed to examine the benefit of prestressing and the optimal prestress level, and a design recommendation is made.
