Abstract

Fire safety of the new internal voids design for highrise buildings in Hong Kong was studied by covering three areas: • Fire in a room adjacent to the internal void, including possibility of flashover and amount of smoke flowing out. • Spread of smoke from the fire level to adjacent levels. • Fire resistance provisions for windows. Fire models including application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) are used for the analysis. CFD results indicated that there might be a potential fire hazard in this kind of design. Further studies should be carried out to investigate the problem.
