Abstract

A novel pulse pattern based on optimal partly unsymmetrical switching angles for FACTS is proposed. The proposed pulse pattern owns only half-wave inverse symmetry, but its quarter-wave symmetry is absent so that the degree of freedom of switching angles is doubled, Therefore, the specific harmonics are controlled by their amplitudes and phase angles. Based on the proposed pulse pattern a new PWM strategy namely OPUS is developed. The exact switching angles, calculated by optimizing the pulse patterns, are shown. The proposed strategy has the advantage of enabling inverter control of the fundamental component and some specific order harmonics according to their amplitudes and phase angles. Especially, the inverter is operated in lower than 1 kHz switching frequency. The validity is verified by FFT analysis.
