Abstract

Noise from ground transportation is a big issue in the dense population area. This is a common situation that residential buildings and community facilities are developed close to busy roads with heavy traffic, which is because of the limited land available in urban area. Many noise mitigation devices are applied to reduce the noise level, such as noise barriers, balconies, ventilation windows etc. As a noise screening device, balconyon a building façade blocks the direct line of sight between the noise source and the façade. Since the balcony becomes more and more popular, details studies on its performance are needed. Scaledown model experiments are used to investigate the balcony noise reduction performance and which are carried out in the semi-Anechoic chamber, with a linear loudspeaker array act as the noise source, and the microphone array is located behind the balcony cavity. Different configurations of the experiments are carried out, including different balcony structures, noise elevation angles, azimuthal. The overall sound pressure level, sound distribution behind the balcony, broadband and one-Third octave band insertion loss are obtained and studied. The findings provide a more fundamental understanding of sound propagation into balconies and indicate that the ceiling reflections and the direct sound play important roles in the noise propagation. Therefore with carefully designed geometry of the balcony, strong noise attenuation and noise reduction can be attained.
