Abstract

The generation and functional integration of adult-born neurons in the hippocampus and subventricular zone suggest an important mechanism of neural plasticity in the adult brain. Dysregulation in adult neurogenesis has been commonly reported in several neurological disorders, suggesting its potential role in the development and pathology of the disorders. Adult neurogenesis might also be involved in the therapeutic process, thereby alleviating the neurological symptoms. We provide an overview of altered adult neurogenesis in animal models and human brains in neurodegenerative diseases, neurodevelopmental disorders, and brain injuries.
